Neuroprotection

Neuroprotection is the therapeutic strategy aimed at maintaining the life and improving the function of neurons.

In the ophthalmic setting, such therapy is applied in glaucoma, a progressive neurodegenerative disease of retinal ganglion cells that shares features with other major neurodegenerative diseases (Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis – ALS).

The primary treatment of glaucoma is lowering intraocular pressure using hypotonizing eye drops, but unfortunately this is not always sufficient to prevent it and/or stop its progression.

In light of this, neuroprotection becomes an important therapeutic opportunity to be combined with hypotonizing, as it is aimed at protecting nerve fibers that are still healthy and strengthening neurons that have not yet been irreversibly damaged. The synergy between these two therapies leads to the preservation of the patient’s visual function, which is the main goal in glaucoma treatment.
